When we are children, our brains, hungry for knowledge, begin to fill with all the information we will need in life. This information is already shaped by the teachings we receive from our parents, but above all by the patterns imposed on us by the society we live in.
Many of us accept this information as fixed while we are still children, as something that will remain with us forever. But the moment we begin to develop the ability to discern for ourselves, it ceases to be immutable and becomes a choice.
Cultures and societies show us realities according to their rules and restrictions. In many countries, it is still a crime to be different, to have a different skin color, different features, to love in a different way… They turn you into a “black sheep” for breaking the pattern that a few dictated and many followed.
Come out of the closet of prejudice. If you see that all the conditioning society has imposed on you is erasing your true self, come out of the closet. It is all right to be different, it is all right to think differently, it is all right to dance as you cross the street, it is all right to love differently, it is all right to be authentic and spontaneous. It is all right to be you.
Be kind to yourself, care for yourself, love yourself—without forgetting to love and respect others. Come out of the closet and let your true self out: the one who laughs, dances, sings, has fun, the one who is happy. You may not see it now, but you are setting a good example for those who want to come out of the closet of prejudice just as much as you do, but still hesitate a little for fear of what people will say.
You are unique, you are special. Come out of the closet of prejudice and show the world your full capacity to love. I am sure you will thank yourself for it.
“Anyone who has destroyed a prejudice, even a single prejudice, is a benefactor of humanity.”
Nicolas Chamfort
